Lasik Eye Surgeon Advertising - Just How Much Can You Believe?

Lasik Advertising - Lasik eye surgeon ads often make strong claims for cleared and improved vision.

Just remember... Lasik laser eye surgery is a big money business.  Many consumers decide on Lasik believing they will never again have a need for eyeglasses or contacts.

Yes, it's true.  Most people do experience an improvement in eyesight after having the Lasik procedure... but some do not.

It is not out of the ordinary for some patients to still need eyeglasses or contacts after the surgery. Honestly you must accept the fact that some will even come out of the Lasik procedure with vision that is worse than before.

The next time you see or hear an enthusiastic advertisement for a Lasik surgery center, you should temper you expectations with a strong douse of reality.

Lasik surgery usually does help most people. Most of the time, patients who undergo the surgery enjoy vision improved to at least 20/40. Not always, but most of the time.

Promise yourself that before having the procedure you will thoroughly research Lasik with some study and a gathering any of question you uncover, so that you can present them to your Lasik surgeon for answers.

There are plenty of good statistics about Lasik surgery results. One study reports that 94 percent of all Lasik patients are satisfied with their results and have at least 20/20 vision following surgery. Of those who have the procedure, the study shows that nearly all patients would recommend the surgery to a friend.

Also, it was found that about 25 percent of the patients who experienced problems with the surgery, could have avoided those problems with more patient education prior to the operation. One report of dissatisfaction was that Lasik does not correct far or near sightedness in people over the age of forty.
Yes, the procedure does have its limitations!

Twenty five percent of those who reported dissatisfaction with the surgery reported problems with night vision, but this condition often resolves itself in a few months.

While Lasik is a relatively easy to endure surgery, don't be misled.  Some patients go into surgery thinking that recovery time is only a couple of hours.

True, the healing time with Lasik is fast, but you will not be ready to drive a care in a couple of hours. Expect your doctor to inform you that driving is forbidden for at least a week after surgery. Furthermore,  expect to be absent from work for about four days after the procedure.

Some patients do report a scratchy feeling on the eye for a couple of days after the surgery, but generally Lasik is pain-free.

As with all surgery, Lasik requires that you take good care of yourself after the fact. That means that you must make and keep your appointments with your eye care professional for post-operative care and evaluation.

Be sensible.  If your doctor prescribes any medications to take after surgery, such as eye drops, it is important that follow the directions exactly to get the best possible results from the surgery.
Your doctor will give you instructions regarding the use of make up.  He or she will also suggest that you avoid rigorous activities for a few days.

Often people who don't have satisfactory improvement in vision were not good candidates for the surgery in the first place. It is crucial that you give your eye care professional detailed information about your health and eye history when he or she asks.  This could make the difference success or failure of your case.

There are reasons why some people should not consider having the procedure. There are several pre-existing conditions that could result in a poor outcome.

For example:  Women who are pregnant or nursing when the surgery is performed can be at an increased risk of an unsuccessful result. There are many hormone fluctuations during pregnancy and nursing that can affect the eye.

If you have diabetes or hepatitis, it is usually not recommended that you have Lasik.
Many people can benefit from the Lasik eye correction surgery. As with any surgery or medical procedure, it is very important to have realistic expectations .  It's a wonderful procedure, but it is not a miracle cure of all vision problems.

Don't let Lasik eye surgeon advertising confuse your.  Do some research. Ask your family doctor for advice and then make your decision.
